Collaboration or Mediation

Collaborative Divorce

In Collaborative Divorce you are either with your lawyer or your coach every step of the way. You are never "on your own". If you are not skilled in negotiating or in understanding financial or legal subtleties you can be assured that your lawyer or coach is always present protecting your interests and assisting you in the process. Because of this support most people are more comfortable in Collaborative Divorce than in mediation.

Mediation

In mediation, you meet with one mediator and must negotiate and advocate for yourself. The mediator must be neutral and cannot give either person legal advice or protect one party from the other. To get the legal advice you require you would need to hire a lawyer, acting outside the process, to give you advice and to get feedback on what is happening within the mediation. This can upset the mediation and ultimately increase your costs.
